Composed of Elijah Kraatz (guitar/vocals) Harry Grabenstein (guitar/vocals), Keith Levenson (percussion), and Kevin Fink (violin), the music of Kraatz Carromato is principally inspired by the Gitanos (Gypsies or, preferably, Roma) of Spain, and Camargue, France. In addition, the Roma carromato - Spanish for caravan - serves as the basis for a broader musical journey that echoes the migration of the Roma people through the Middle East and Europe, connecting Spanish rumba flamenco with Balkan, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern influences. Performing traditional material and original compositions drawn from these musical forms, Carromato’s repertoire feature songs of migration, of longing for a homeland, of hope and resilience. While many compositions are instrumental, listeners will also hear traditional songs sung in Spanish, Bosnian, English, and the Romani language.
